Setting up MySite as a different Application

To correctly set up the “My Site” you should put it in a different application domain.  You will get the following message: Validate the My Site Host and Individual My Sites are on a dedicated Web application and separate URL Domain

Here is how to go about doing this:

Under Central Administration, select New to create a new site from the ribbon

Ensure that you have created an A record for “my” (or My Site)

Enter the following information as such:

You will get this message:

Now, create the site collection as a My Site Host

Ensure that you have Self Service Site Creation enabled

Click OK

You should be set!

The next step is to let SharePoint know that is where your default MySite is going to be located.

In Central Administration point to: Manage Service Applications under Application Management.

Select User Profile Service Application

Select Setup My Sites in My Site Settings

One last bit of configuration that I am noticing is that I cannot add new “My Content”.  Here is how to fix that:

Your personal site cannot be created because the managed path "personal" has not been created for this site. Contact your site administrator for more information.

Select your application, then choose Managed Paths in the ribbion

Type in “personal” in your path.

Select OK and you can test it now.

Works for me now!

  2. How do you go about linking the mysites back to the portal ? And I was wondering how you would go about getting a link on the Nav bar (the one containing the Overview, Content, Tags and Notes, etc) on the “My Profile” page that links to your / their blog ? So I could change the nav bar system wide.

    Hi Bill,
First of all I want to say that this is a great article. Thank you for taking time a write this down. Nevertheless I consider that you missed a step on “Type in “personal” in your path.”: after you type the word “personal”, you have to press the “Add path” button and after that the “OK” button.

    Cheers,
    Bogdan

I followed your instructions, however when accessing mysites now I am prompted with a windows auth login box. I assume that this is now because I am not accessing the mysite using the netbios name of the sharepoint server, but rather the name my.insertdomainhere.com. I can provide the correct authentication and it works, but it should be seamless. Help?

Are you using the IE to access the site? I guess you will have to add my.insertdomainname.com to your Intranet Zone in IE.

    Hi Bill,

I have received an wired issue. In our Production SharePoint 2010 environment, we have enabled mysite and newsfeed when we configured the environment for the first time. And it was working fine, i.e users were able to view feeds and tags under “My Newsfeed” section of their My Sites. Now just few days back users started complaining that they are not able to view anything under “My Newsfeed”.

When I checked, I found that under CA>>User Profile Service Application>>Setup My Sites page “Security Trimming Options” and “Newsfeed” are not visible.

I checked the Activity Feed job, and it is working. I am really cluless in this case.

    Please help.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Kalyan Guin

Very helpful article. to avoid the message “Your personal site cannot be created because the managed path “personal” has not been created for this site. Contact your site administrator for more information.”, rather than adding the path, I simply changed the “Personal Site Location” to ‘sites’ (which is a path that already exists). Now the My Content page will be created under http://my.example.local/sites//default.aspx which is fine as far as I’m concerned.
